An Interview with Kindred Skincare Co

(Makers of All-Natural, Plant & Botanically Based Skincare)

I’m Frances Thrasher, and I founded Kindred Skincare Co.

What inspired the creation of your company, and when did it start?

I could not find an effective organic skincare that would be gentle on my allergy prone skin. I started formulating products and testing them on myself and friends 15 years ago, but did not think about turning it into a business until 2 years ago.

What is your brand’s mission, and what causes drive you and your team?

To bring awareness to the hidden chemicals in so many “natural” brands of skincare and makeup, and to offer a truly transparent and effective option.

How is your brand socially responsible?

We are very mindful of sources of our raw materials, we have everything manufactured in the US, and we are committed to contributing to local causes.

What does your brand do to lower its ecological impact and/or promote environmental health and well-being?

We designed our packaging to never be thrown away, the recycled cardboard tubes are meant to be kept for a traveling container. We offer a refill program with our glass bottles, to minimize waste and increase awareness or use/reuse.

Does your company perform animal testing and/or use animal-based ingredients in your products? Why or why not?

Absolutely not! All testing is done on myself and then very willing friends and family members. I cannot even understand how this would be effective. Also, even thought there are no chemicals in ANY of my products, there are certain herbs and plants that are toxic to animals, but not people. We metabolize things so differently.

Where does your company make/manufacture your products, and why?

I hand batch every product in my shop in Wilmington, DE. The sway I can assure all the quality of raw ingredients as well as the final products.

Describe your design philosophy – how do you balance quality and affordability?

Quality is the product speaking for you. If there is not high quality, there is no business! Sadly, the cost of guaranteeing that all raw materials are certified organic increases the cost anywhere from 3 to 10 fold, I can assure the consumer that the product they are using, that is being absorbed INTO their body, is safe.

Tell us a little about the ingredients/materials you use. Generally, why did you pick them over other options?

There is no short answer for this. Each product is chosen for its benefits and blended at proper proportions to insure efficacy and proper consumption of said benefits. I have researched botanical for well over 15 years to learn the pros and cons of each plant and how best to use it on the skin.

What are the next steps for your company?

Continue to grow awareness of the brand. The product speaks for itself, I just need to spread the love.

How do you view the future of conscious consumption?

I would love to have the ability to refine the raw materials myself so that I can assure quality, sustainability and offer jobs.

As a parting sentiment, if you could only use one word to describe your brand ethos – what would it be?

Family
