I get asked a whole lot, “Hey Jake, what ingredients should I look for — and avoid — when buying cleaning products?”

It’s a pretty important question considering the nature of cleaning products; many contain harsh chemicals such as surfactants, VOC’s (volatile organic compounds), and phthalates, which can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation. I’ve found that others aren’t made with biodegradable ingredients, which, when these products are disposed of in landfills, may lead to toxic chemicals entering one’s water supply or leaching nutrients from marine ecosystems. Moreover, because these chemicals are known to be environmentally persistence – meaning they last for a long time – they hurt soil fertility and soil microbial biodiversity. I know it may seem trivial, but this is NOT good!

In short, it’s best to look out for both your own health, but also the health of plants and animals when selecting cleaning products. Opt for cleaning products made from plant extracts and with natural cleaners, such as lemon concentrate. Also, look for cleaning products made without synthetic fragrances. This recommendation is both a personal opinion and a health consideration, as it is often these synthetic scents that cause irritation.

These are the essential green cleaning products that I tell my family to use – these all-purpose cleaners are plant-based, recognized by the EPA, and made without harsh chemicals. Plus, they’re made with botanical extracts, giving them a natural scent. Best of all, they’re still effective! If you don’t believe me, just read the reviews.

Green Cleaning Essentials for the Home: “A Clean Surface, A Clean Slate”

Safe & Plant-based Surface Cleaners

Phosphate-free, Natural All-purpose Cleaner with No Harmful Synthetics
By: Sun & Earth

A Better Alternative

I just told a friend of mine about this company and their cleaning products. As this kit is made for all-purpose surface cleaners, I picked their cruelty-free, phosphate-free and dye-free, natural citrus surface cleaner. It’s as effective as conventional brand cleaners – and can be used on kitchen and bathroom surfaces – but is made with no harmful synthetics. It’s a good, staple product to have in your cleaning cabinet.

Plant-based, EPA-Recognized Natural Compostable Cleaning Wipes
By: Green Works

A Better Alternative

This is something that I’ve always looked for: plant-based, compostable cleaning wipes. I don’t like the thought of throwing my chemical-soaked cleaning wipes into the garbage, as they’ll only end up in landfills and further contaminate whatever ecosystem they come into contact with. Enter, Green Works 99% naturally derived compostable cleaning wipes. I use these pretty often; they leave no chemical residue, have a natural smell and can be used on virtually any surface. I’ll usually clean my bathroom surfaces, kitchen counter tops, and desk with them.

RATING

Biodegradable, Reusable Natural Multi-use Cleaning Cloth
By: Skoy

A Better Alternative

Whenever I clean my home, I avoid using paper towels. Why? Because I feel it’s expensive and wasteful. This is one my favorite re-usable cleaning cloths; it’s made from natural cotton and wood-based cellulose pulp, making it biodegradable, super absorbent and fast-drying. It’s an easy and mindful way to replace your paper towels. Plus, to clean the cloth, you can place it in the microwave for 30-45 seconds to kill germs, or put it in the dishwasher or washer and dryer.

RATING

Non-toxic Glass & Surface Care, 100% Naturally-derived Formula
By: Simple Green Naturals

A Better Alternative

Stop using conventional, commercial brand window cleaners! That popular product (which shall not be named, but rhymes with index) contains ammonium hydroxide and hexoxyethanol – both of which, according to the EPA, are harsh chemicals that pose health and safety concerns. As an equally effective alternative, I recommend this natural reflective surface cleaner. It can be used on glass, mirrors, and chrome surfaces, to name a few. It also cleans with 100% naturally-derived ingredients, without ammonia and rubbing alcohol.

RATING

EPA-registered, Disinfecting Bathroom Cleaner – Botanical Disinfectants
By: Seventh Generation

A Better Alternative

For my final pick, I chose my go-to cleaning company, Seventh Generation. I have this product in my cabinet right now, in fact. It’s a staple natural bathroom cleaner, and is EPA-registered, which means it passes ingredient standards set by the EPA for health, safety, and product disposal. When I use it, I like the after lemon scent, but if you use too much of it, it can be a bit strong.

View Our Research Standards.

Each of our six badges has its own unique set of metrics. These are some of the qualities (i.e., metrics) we try to look into when assessing a product and brand with respect to each of our badges:

AGREEABLE CO FLAT ICONS 3__NEW

Socially Responsible (purple triangle):
+ Does the company abide by Fair Trade Practices, or is it Fair Trade Certified;
+ Is there a commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR);
+ Is the company philanthropic – does it donate goods or services to environmental or humanitarian efforts;
+ Does the brand promote corporate transparency;
+ Are there any community engagement initiatives set in place;
+ Does the company communicate healthy and equitable working conditions along the supply chain;
+ Does the brand abide by fair and honorable employment values;
+ Is there a disclosure of sourcing methods, and are such materials or ingredients sourced responsibly;
+ Does the brand have a cause-driven mission towards human & environmental health & well-being.
*We do not conduct in-person audits. Oftentimes we will consult the language and standards set by third-party certifications and seals such as Fair Trade Certified, B Corp Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified, Green America Certified, etc. We will, however, do independent research with respect to certain badges and utilize peer-reviewed articles. Also, please note that according to the Journal of Economics and the EPA, “social responsibility” does include practices and commitments that support environmental health and well-being; thus, the qualities of this badge may overlap with our other badges.

Eco-Conscious (red triangle):
+ Does the company practice sustainable modes of production;
+ Is the product composed of materials and/or ingredients that are biodegradable;
+ Are the materials and/or ingredients compostable;
+ Does the company have carbon reduction or mitigation strategies set in place;
+ Do the involved materials and/or ingredients have a relatively low environmentally impact;
+ Does the company utilize reduce or reuse principles in their facilities;
+ Does the company use renewable or efficient energy technologies in the production of their good(s);
+ Are there practices in place that work to maintain ecosystem biodiversity;
+ Is environmental stewardship a part of their business model.
*We aim to be transparent and objective when it comes to labeling a product as “Eco-Conscious”, and reject “greenwashing”. According to marketing and advertising standards set by The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Green Guides, it is most accurate to communicate not that a product is necessarily “good” for the environment, but that it is a “better environmental alternative”. This is the message we aim to communicate in labeling a product as “Eco-Conscious”.

Quality Materials/Ingredients (M/I) (green triangle):
+ Does the product contain organic or certified organic m/i;
+ Is there a significant degree of m/i ‘naturalness’;
+ Is the product non-GMO or Verified Non-GMO;
+ Are the m/i biodegradable;
+ Are the m/i compostable;
+ Do the m/i raise little to no concern in terms of m/i toxicity;
+ Is the product treated with harsh chemicals;
+ Is there a healthy ratio of synthetic or artificial m/i to natural m/i;
*For select “Pantry” products, we may look into health and nutritional value.
*For select products, we may consult reviews to assess m/i effectiveness.
*Generally, these are the ingredients that we try to steer clear of: Acesulfame-K (acesulfame potassium), Acetylated ester of mono- and diglycerides, Ammonium chloride, Antibiotics, Artificial colors (Synthetic and FD&C Certified), Artificial flavors, Aspartame, Astaxanthin, Azodicarbonamide, Bentonite, Benzoates, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), Bisulfites, Bromated flour, Brominated vegetable oil (BVO), Calcium bromate, Calcium disodium, EDTA, Calcium peroxide, Calcium propionate, Calcium stearoyl-2-lactylate, Calcium sorbate, Caprocaprylobehenin Carmine, DATEM (diacetyl tartaric and fatty acid esters of mono and diglycerides), Diglycerides (acceptable in supplements), Dimethylpolysiloxane, Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DSS), Disodium calcium EDTA, Disodium dihydrogen, Disodium guanylate (GMP), Disodium succinate, Dimethylamylamine (DMAA)… Read more at Free From 101.
