Kit by: Jake Madoff
Co-Founder | Agreeable & Co.

The idea for this kit came from a need to find a few clothing essentials for a vegan friend who was having a birthday. And, just to be clear, when I say “vegan friend” I mean a friend that practices veganism not only in the food he eats, but in the clothing and personal care products he uses.

That’s correct; some people practice a vegan lifestyle, not only a vegan diet. Most, from personal conversations I’ve had, do this for ethical reasons — as products that contain animal ingredients or animal byproducts often involve rather unfavorable sourcing methods — while others choose to go vegan for financial reasons, as leather is an expensive material.

Nonetheless, in this kit you’ll find six basic men’s clothing/accessory items that offer both an environmentally-conscious and vegan-friendly alternative to everyday things in your closet. Specifically, below you’ll discover a pair of organic cotton jeans (slim fit), a modern bamboo top, and cork wallet that is 100% biodegradable. I tried to craft this kit like an outfit — so feel free to buy one of the things that catch your eye, or mix and match to create a cool outfit.

Outfit by ethical fashion brands + sustainable men’s clothing crafted with eco-textiles & organic cotton

Straight-Slim Fit, Stretch Denim Jeans – 100% Premium Organic Cotton
By: Nau Clothing

A Better Alternative

Nau is a women’s and men’s clothing company based in Portland, Oregon. Their goal is to use design to redefine business. They do this by applying rules of sustainability and philanthropy to their products and outlook. Nau uses organic cotton, non-toxic finishes and recyclable materials in their design and donates 2% of every sale to humanitarian causes. This pair of jeans is a favorite of mine — it has a classic feel, a great slim cut, and is made with 100% organic cotton.

Reinforced Cork Wallet – Vegan & Sustainably Crafted (A Better Alternative to Leather Wallets)
By: Corkor

A Better Alternative

Right off the bat, I’m a big fan of cork — for several reasons. The reason cork is an eco-friendly choice is both because it’s categorized as a highly renewable durable resource, and because cork is obtained from the bark of the cork tree, which means the tree itself isn’t harmed and stays intact, and can therefore continue to sequester carbon. This wallet is handcrafted by artisans in Portugal and is built to last. I have yet to get one, but I hope to soon.

Fitted Bamboo Tee – 100% Vegan & Biodegradable
By: Star Seeds

A Better Alternative

If you’re into the fitted shirt look, I recommend trying this tee out. It contours the body well, doesn’t shrink in the wash, and has a bit of stretch to it. I like to wear it when I run or workout because it’s super lightweight. You’ll also notice that it’s made from bamboo. The company page talks a bit more about how and why their process is sustainable; check them out.

Cotton Hooded Pullover Sweatshirt – Comfortable Fit
By: Good hYOUman

A Better Alternative

Pretty much everyone owns a hooded sweatshirt. Good hYOUman prides themselves on making quality goods; plus, all their clothing is crafted in the USA. Their brand philosophy is also all about social responsibility and fair labor values. I came across an interview with their founder that talks about said values. Nevertheless, this sweatshirt is priced well and has a pretty cool look and feel to it.

Men’s Classic Canvas Slip-On – Jungle Pattern
By: TOMS

A Better Alternative

TOMS is a company that pretty much needs no introduction when it comes to corporate social responsibility, philanthropy, community engagement, and sustainability. They’re one of the foremost brands moving, earnestly, towards meaningful and conscious consumption. These canvas shoes are made using low-impact design strategies — and, in terms of durability, these shoes last me about a year and a half before I have to get new ones (but that’s also probably because I wear them often). Moreover, because they’re slip-on and lightweight, they’re a comfortable shoe for Summer and Spring.

Fair Trade, Hand-crafted Wood Beaded Bracelet
By: NOVICA

A Better Alternative

As a little something extra, I wanted to include a men’s bracelet. I chose this one because it’s handcrafted, which means each will have a unique pattern, and because it’s Fair Trade. To give you some background, NOVICA is a Fair Trade certified company that collaborates with design artisans around the globe, and strives to make their creations accessible to the everyday consumer. Also, let this wood bracelet replace your leather one! …If you’re wearing a leather one, that is.

View Our Research Standards.

Each of our six badges has its own unique set of metrics. These are some of the qualities (i.e., metrics) we try to look into when assessing a product and brand with respect to each of our badges:

AGREEABLE CO FLAT ICONS 3__NEW

Socially Responsible (purple triangle):
+ Does the company abide by Fair Trade Practices, or is it Fair Trade Certified;
+ Is there a commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR);
+ Is the company philanthropic – does it donate goods or services to environmental or humanitarian efforts;
+ Does the brand promote corporate transparency;
+ Are there any community engagement initiatives set in place;
+ Does the company communicate healthy and equitable working conditions along the supply chain;
+ Does the brand abide by fair and honorable employment values;
+ Is there a disclosure of sourcing methods, and are such materials or ingredients sourced responsibly;
+ Does the brand have a cause-driven mission towards human & environmental health & well-being.
*We do not conduct in-person audits. Oftentimes we will consult the language and standards set by third-party certifications and seals such as Fair Trade Certified, B Corp Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified, Green America Certified, etc. We will, however, do independent research with respect to certain badges and utilize peer-reviewed articles. Also, please note that according to the Journal of Economics and the EPA, “social responsibility” does include practices and commitments that support environmental health and well-being; thus, the qualities of this badge may overlap with our other badges.

Eco-Conscious (red triangle):
+ Does the company practice sustainable modes of production;
+ Is the product composed of materials and/or ingredients that are biodegradable;
+ Are the materials and/or ingredients compostable;
+ Does the company have carbon reduction or mitigation strategies set in place;
+ Do the involved materials and/or ingredients have a relatively low environmentally impact;
+ Does the company utilize reduce or reuse principles in their facilities;
+ Does the company use renewable or efficient energy technologies in the production of their good(s);
+ Are there practices in place that work to maintain ecosystem biodiversity;
+ Is environmental stewardship a part of their business model.
*We aim to be transparent and objective when it comes to labeling a product as “Eco-Conscious”, and reject “greenwashing”. According to marketing and advertising standards set by The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Green Guides, it is most accurate to communicate not that a product is necessarily “good” for the environment, but that it is a “better environmental alternative”. This is the message we aim to communicate in labeling a product as “Eco-Conscious”.

Quality Materials/Ingredients (M/I) (green triangle):
+ Does the product contain organic or certified organic m/i;
+ Is there a significant degree of m/i ‘naturalness’;
+ Is the product non-GMO or Verified Non-GMO;
+ Are the m/i biodegradable;
+ Are the m/i compostable;
+ Do the m/i raise little to no concern in terms of m/i toxicity;
+ Is the product treated with harsh chemicals;
+ Is there a healthy ratio of synthetic or artificial m/i to natural m/i;
*For select “Pantry” products, we may look into health and nutritional value.
*For select products, we may consult reviews to assess m/i effectiveness.
*Generally, these are the ingredients that we try to steer clear of: Acesulfame-K (acesulfame potassium), Acetylated ester of mono- and diglycerides, Ammonium chloride, Antibiotics, Artificial colors (Synthetic and FD&C Certified), Artificial flavors, Aspartame, Astaxanthin, Azodicarbonamide, Bentonite, Benzoates, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), Bisulfites, Bromated flour, Brominated vegetable oil (BVO), Calcium bromate, Calcium disodium, EDTA, Calcium peroxide, Calcium propionate, Calcium stearoyl-2-lactylate, Calcium sorbate, Caprocaprylobehenin Carmine, DATEM (diacetyl tartaric and fatty acid esters of mono and diglycerides), Diglycerides (acceptable in supplements), Dimethylpolysiloxane, Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DSS), Disodium calcium EDTA, Disodium dihydrogen, Disodium guanylate (GMP), Disodium succinate, Dimethylamylamine (DMAA)… Read more at Free From 101.
