Kit by: Jake Madoff

I imagine there’s a few bikers that have passed through the Agreeable & Co. site. I don’t need to regale you with factoids about how and why biking is the healthy and sustainable alternative to driving — you should really consider biking if you don’t already — but I did think it would be helpful to curate a kit of my favorite bike accessories that I use throughout my New York City travels. Of course, these products are good for any biker — they may simply have a more urban slant or design to them.

*Given the kind of kit this is, we didn’t do our usual rating schema.

Biking Kit: Everything You Need to Bike in New York City

reduce your carbon footprint

Commuter, Urban Bike (For City Streets)
By: TREK

A Conscious Alternative

I use a slightly older model of the TREK commuter bike, but this is one of their newest versions under this style of bike. TREK bikes are super high-quality. It would take a lot for make me to switch to a new bike. Click through and check out the specs. I know you probably need to ride one to see if it’s a good fit for you, but consider looking into TREK.

Modern, Top-Rreviewed Bike Helmet with Impact Foam: EPS
By: POC

A Conscious Alternative

This is the exact model helmet I use by POC (same color too). I did a ton of research before buying a helmet — I don’t play around when it comes to the safety of my noggin. You shouldn’t either. As someone probably said at one point in history, “Safety is really cool.” You can read about this helmet, here, or watch the video below.

One Road, Top-Reviewed Premium Bike Helmet
By: Bolle

A Conscious Alternative

I figured I would also include in this kit the helmet that was my second choice. This one, too, was highly reviewed for safety and durability, so it came down to a matter of aesthetics. I like a more minimalist look, but this helmet is still neat. It also comes with removable side modules and a space for sunglasses (a helpful feature). Feel free to read more about Bolle helmets, here.

Folding City Bike (6 Speed Shimano Gear) – Steel Frame with Mudguard & Rear Carrier
By: IDS

A Conscious Alternative

I personally don’t use a folding bike, but I have several friends that do. They recommended this one. Folding bikes are helpful in the city, as they’re lightweight, easy to store and can be brought up to your room or office (which ensures they won’t get stolen). This one is 6 speeds, many only have one.

LED, Energy Efficient Bike Light (USB Rechargeable) – Front & Back Light
By: Cycle Torch

A Conscious Alternative

This is also the exact pair of lights I use on my bike. LED lights are a must (this is not a marketing line, you should really consider using LED lights for your bike if you’re not using them already). As you’ll see from the images when you click through, these lights are incredibly bright (200 Lumens), have multiple flashing options, a one-size-fits-all rubber strap for your handles, and is USB rechargeable (which means you don’t have to waste money and produce unnecessary material waste with batteries).

18mm Hardened Steel Fahgettaboudit U-Lock
By: Kryptonite

A Conscious Alternative

Kryptonite made a lock especially for New York City bikers. This is that lock. Don’t mess around with bad, weak locks. I’ve had my bike stolen. Not fun. Here’s a video that explains how killer this lock actually is:

Security Bike Lock (M6 Self Coiling) – Includes Mounting Bracket
By: Etronic

A Conscious Alternative

It’s recommended that you use one U-lock and one cable lock to lock up your bike. I’ve talked with many fellow New York bikers — it’s standard to use the big, U-lock to lock the frame of your bike to a post and use the cable to lock your back wheel to the frame and to the post. Here’s an image that shows what I”m talking about:

Easy-to-Use & Install Bike Rack / Holder (Vertical or Horizontal Hold) – Plus Stores Helmet & Lights
By: Cycloc

A Conscious Alternative

I personally prefer to store my bike inside, rather than somewhere outside overnight. This is my favorite bike hanger / holder. You can rotate it in any direction (to hold your bike vertically or horizontally against a wall), and it’s designed to offer space for your helmet, bike lock, keys and lights. It also kind of looks like a piece of modern art on the wall when your bike isn’t on it. Suffice to say, it’s not unsightly. Here’s a video that shows the installation process:

Soft, Gel Relief Bike Seat Cushion / Pad / Cover
By: Shineland

A Conscious Alternative

Perhaps your bike seat is already designed with a comfortable seat, but, if not, here’s the bike seat cover I recommend. It’s made with a soft gel and attaches / un-attaches easily onto / off of the seat of your bike. It’s also made of anti-skid and wear-resistant elastic Lycra material.

Lightweight, Aluminum Water Bottle Cage / Holder
By: Ibera

A Conscious Alternative

Water is important. I like to have a bottle of water handy when I’m riding around the city. I like the modern, clean look of this bottle holder — it’s also durable and attaches easily to the frame of your bike. Feel free to click through to read the weight and other specs.

A Few More

If you’re a super avid biker and like your biking gear — I understand and got you covered. Here’s a few extra biking accessories that may serve to enhance your biking experiences.
