We feel that the office is good place to start when it comes to changing to more sustainable behaviors and products.

The office is a space that generates quite a bit of waste — from pens, pencils, paper and plastic desk toys. Of course, we’re not telling you to get rid of your beloved desk toys, but we would like you to swap out those staple office supplies for more sustainable ones. It’s not hard. It doesn’t cost extra.

To get your started, here’s a kit of 10 well-designed and sustainable office alternatives, ranging from supplies to desk accessories, made by conscious brands. We use some of these ourselves.

If you’re hesitant about living a more sustainable life (for some reason), we recommend, as a first step, switching over to relatively more eco-friendly pens and paper. It’s an easy place start. We’ve included some in this kit.

10 Everday Office Alternatives for Conscious Consumers

Well-Designed + Sustainable

100% Tree-free Paper, Acid-Free Paper & 100% Post Consumer Recycled (Banana Plantation Agricultural Waste)
By: EcoPaper

A Conscious Alternative

Not sure about you, but we virtually always keep a journal around when we work. Some things we simply prefer to write down, rather than put into a Google Doc. (I know, crazy!). This journal is from one of our favorite sustainable paper brands, EcoPaper. According to their site, their paper products are “composed of both 100% recycled post-consumer paper and agro-industrial waste, gathered by a special collector team.” They upcycle agricultural waste from “banana, coffee, lemon, mango, and tobacco plantations.”

Eco, Low-Impact Pen (Biodegradable) – Made from Renewable Resources
By: Paper Mate

A Conscious Alternative

Conventional pens sucks…that is, in terms of how they impact the environment. They’re often made of a cheap plastic, that’s not biodegradable and non-recyclable (yes, not all plastic is commercially recyclable). Furthermore, very rarely, if ever, will you find pens made with vegetable ink. Standard pen ink not only produces a significant amount of toxic waste as a byproduct, but, when thrown away, that ink gets into runoff and impacts ecosystems. This pen is 100% biodegradable and made from renewable resources. THIS IS AN EASY CHANGE TO MAKE. We want to make this abundantly clear. 🙂

Handmade, 100% Soy Wax Candle (Reusable Containers) – Pine, Woods & Cabin Scents
By: BrandIron

A Conscious Alternative

Candles are another thing we like to have in our work space — and just around the home. In our experience, handmade (i.e, hand-mixed and poured) candles made with organic ingredients smell better than conventional ones, which often contain a mix of synthetic and natural ingredients. These candles are made with all-natural essential oils and are scented, quite literally, to make you feel like you’re working in a log cabin, in the middle of a woody forest…with a campfire.

Portable/Foldable LED, Energy-Efficient Desk Lamp with Eye-Care (+ USB Charging Port)
By: Imesun

A Conscious Alternative

You probably already have a desk lamp on your work desk — but is it LED? Now, we don’t recommend throwing away your current lamp if it’s still working perfectly fine, but perhaps it’ll accept LED bulbs if you’re still using incandescent. The money and energy-saving potential of LEDs are worth it. But, if you need a small, portable lamp for an end table or desk, here’s one that’s LED and has eye-care technology built in. We also like the minimalist design.

Bamboo Stand Up Desk Platform (Eco-friendly BamTuff Bamboo)
By: Standee

A Conscious Alternative

Apologizes for being those people…but standing up while you work is not only important, but is, arguably, integral to maintaining good posture and healthy circulation. You may have ready that study that went viral a bit ago about how bad sitting all day is (we’ll link to it, here). It changed our minds. This is a simple bamboo desk accessory that raises your laptop just the right amount. It also provides some storage space below. The company has a collection of photos on their website with this thing in action.

RATING

Multi Device Charging Station (100% Eco-Friendly Bamboo)
By: Great Useful Stuff

A Conscious Alternative

This is another super helpful desk accessory. It’s an all-in-one charging station for your personal devices. It’s also made from bamboo. We detail a few of the reasons for why bamboo is considered one of the best sustainable, renewable resources on our other page, if you’re curious.

Natural Wood Headphones Stand/Hanger/Holder
By: Omega

A Conscious Alternative

This is one of those products where you kind of go, “Do I really need this?” The answer: no, you don’t. But if you’re a developer, designer, editor or like to listen to music while you work, this holder is helpful. It’ll help your headphone wires to not get tangled and will give you an easy place to store and grab your headphones. We also just like the look and feel of it.

RATING

Premium Grade, Bamboo Coasters (Set of 4)
By: Bambu

A Conscious Alternative

Bambu® is a great company. They handcraft products made from sustainable and certified organic bamboo, and source their materials from local woodworkers. Bambu® also donates to the non-for-profit program, Seafood Watch. We love the look and feel of their products. If you’re like us and use coasters and like tree motifs, then go for these.

Handmade, Canvas Backpack with Upcycled Fabrics & Natural Dyes (Fair Trade, Artisans in Ecuador)
By: Suspiro Taller

A Conscious Alternative

We try to keep our eyes open for well-designed, cruelty-free backpacks. We’ve received some requests and emails in the past about how hard it is to find cool-looking backpacks without leather, so when we come across one, we try to include it in a kit. This backpack is made, abiding by Fair Trade standards, with upcycled fabrics and natural dyes. It does have wool (i.e, if you’re concerned about it being vegan), but, according to their page, it’s an upcycled fabric.

RATING

100% Tree-free, Unbleached Paper (100% Compostable) – Made from Recycled Sugar Cane
By: TreeZero

A Conscious Alternative

Another relatively easy change to make is using tree-free paper. What? Tree-free paper? Yes. Like the journal above, this paper is made from a similar mixture of agricultural waste. It’s also unbleached — and don’t get us started on how bad the bleaching process is (it produces a ton of toxic waste as a byproduct). Overall, a solid, sustainable office supply.

RATING

View Our Research Standards.

Each of our six badges has its own unique set of metrics. These are some of the qualities (i.e., metrics) we try to look into when assessing a product and brand with respect to each of our badges:

AGREEABLE CO FLAT ICONS 3__NEW

Socially Responsible (purple triangle):
+ Does the company abide by Fair Trade Practices, or is it Fair Trade Certified;
+ Is there a commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR);
+ Is the company philanthropic – does it donate goods or services to environmental or humanitarian efforts;
+ Does the brand promote corporate transparency;
+ Are there any community engagement initiatives set in place;
+ Does the company communicate healthy and equitable working conditions along the supply chain;
+ Does the brand abide by fair and honorable employment values;
+ Is there a disclosure of sourcing methods, and are such materials or ingredients sourced responsibly;
+ Does the brand have a cause-driven mission towards human & environmental health & well-being.
*We do not conduct in-person audits. Oftentimes we will consult the language and standards set by third-party certifications and seals such as Fair Trade Certified, B Corp Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified, Green America Certified, etc. We will, however, do independent research with respect to certain badges and utilize peer-reviewed articles. Also, please note that according to the Journal of Economics and the EPA, “social responsibility” does include practices and commitments that support environmental health and well-being; thus, the qualities of this badge may overlap with our other badges.

Eco-Conscious (red triangle):
+ Does the company practice sustainable modes of production;
+ Is the product composed of materials and/or ingredients that are biodegradable;
+ Are the materials and/or ingredients compostable;
+ Does the company have carbon reduction or mitigation strategies set in place;
+ Do the involved materials and/or ingredients have a relatively low environmental impact;
+ Does the company utilize reduce or reuse principles in their facilities;
+ Does the company use renewable or efficient energy technologies in the production of their good(s);
+ Are there practices in place that work to maintain ecosystem biodiversity;
+ Is environmental stewardship a part of their business model.
*We aim to be transparent and objective when it comes to labeling a product as “Eco-Conscious”, and reject “greenwashing”. According to marketing and advertising standards set by The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Green Guides, it is most accurate to communicate not that a product is necessarily “good” for the environment, but that it is a “better environmental alternative”. This is the message we aim to communicate in labeling a product as “Eco-Conscious”.

Quality Materials/Ingredients (M/I) (green triangle):
+ Does the product contain organic or certified organic m/i;
+ Is there a significant degree of m/i ‘naturalness’;
+ Is the product non-GMO or Verified Non-GMO;
+ Are the m/i biodegradable;
+ Are the m/i compostable;
+ Do the m/i raise little to no concern in terms of m/i toxicity;
+ Is the product treated with harsh chemicals;
+ Is there a healthy ratio of synthetic or artificial m/i to natural m/i;
*For select “Pantry” products, we may look into health and nutritional value.
*For select products, we may consult reviews to assess m/i effectiveness.
*Generally, these are the ingredients that we try to steer clear of: Acesulfame-K (acesulfame potassium), Acetylated ester of mono- and diglycerides, Ammonium chloride, Antibiotics, Artificial colors (Synthetic and FD&C Certified), Artificial flavors, Aspartame, Astaxanthin, Azodicarbonamide, Bentonite, Benzoates, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), Bisulfites, Bromated flour, Brominated vegetable oil (BVO), Calcium bromate, Calcium disodium, EDTA, Calcium peroxide, Calcium propionate, Calcium stearoyl-2-lactylate, Calcium sorbate, Caprocaprylobehenin Carmine, DATEM (diacetyl tartaric and fatty acid esters of mono and diglycerides), Diglycerides (acceptable in supplements), Dimethylpolysiloxane, Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DSS), Disodium calcium EDTA, Disodium dihydrogen, Disodium guanylate (GMP), Disodium succinate, Dimethylamylamine (DMAA)… Read more at Free From 101.
