Alrighty, here’s another kit in our serious of 10 gifts for environmentalists. Our last curated kit was ‘eco everyday carry‘ themed — involving 10 sustainable personal accessories for everyday life — so we decided to change it up a bit and do a kit of sustainable gifts for your home.

Since these products / gifts are perhaps best meant for those who are environmentally inclined, each have a minimalist, naturalistic aesthetic to them. We also made a pointed effort to pick products that were made sustainably, by conscious brands — as we imagine that if you’re looking for gifts to get your eco-oriented friend, they’ll appreciated the sustainable elements. It’s also what we do here at Agreeable & Co. if this is your first time here. 🙂

Nonetheless, enjoy! We hope you appreciate these conscious finds. If you end up liking one, let us know in the comments.

Hand-carved, Food-Safe Wood Bowls Made from Reclaimed Wood Cedar Stumps
By: WELLAND

A Conscious Alternative

We love the look of this piece. It’s handmade (i.e., hand-carved) by artisans and composed of a single, reclaimed cedar wood stump. It’s also finished with a food-safe lacquer. We imagine your eco-oriented friend will enjoy the aesthetic. We do 🙂

Himalayan Pyramid Salt Lamp Natural Crystal Rock (100% Natural Himalayan Salt) – Air Purifier by Emitting Negative Ions
By: Indus Classic

A Conscious Alternative

According to their site, this lamp works as an air purifier by emitting negative ions into the air — and incorporates soft light therapy to reduce stress and increase energy. Although this sounds a bit odd just by looking at it, Himalayan Salt has been known to purify air, and warm lightening does help to make one calmer…so we say it’s worth a try. Nevertheless, it’s beautifully crafted and makes for a stellar, naturalistic night light.

100% Natural Agate (No Dyes) Bookends Geode Crystal (From Brazil)
By: Dia

A Conscious Alternative

We have a pair of geode bookends in our own apartment. Interestingly enough, geodes form when a bubble of carbon dioxide and water vapor forms in flows of lava. The baby geode (as some may say) then goes through a process of cooling and natural weathering which help to form the ornate, crystallized cavity that we usually recognize in geodes. This pair of geodes in particular is 100% natural – there’s no artificial dyes or coloring.

Handmade, Driftwood Air Plant Magnets – Driftwood is Locally & Sustainably Sourced from the Pacific
By: Anson Design

A Conscious Alternative

Air plants are a rather recent fad in natural home decor. Air plants are an extremely low maintenance and resistant plant. They do not require soil and receive nutrients through their leaves. With this set in particular, the base of each air plant is secured with a natural glue to the piece of driftwood. You can hang these guys on any metal surface (they have magnets in the back).

Hand-carved, Natural Wood Utensil Vase, from Reclaimed Mango Wood
By: Enrico

A Conscious Alternative

Be the coolest person in your office and put your pens, pencils and desk tools in this vase — or, use it as an earthy vase for small plants. That was our cheesy sales pitch.

We do genuinely love the look of reclaimed wood and have a pretty good feeling that you’d be happy to get this as a gift for your eco-oriented friend, or at least put it on your wishlist.

Modern, Eco Throw Pillow – Filled With Eco Friendly Recycled Fiber
By: Lava Pillows

A Conscious Alternative

It’s taken awhile for pillows to become sustainable. That is, there’s seemingly not many eco-friendly options for bedding on the market right now. This pillow, though, is filled with 100% recycled fibers, and has a nature-esque feel to it. So, if your environmental friend wants / needs a pillow for their place, we recommend this one.

100% Recycled Glass Lilac Purple Small Wave Rim Bowl – Handmade in Spain
By: Traders and Company

A Conscious Alternative

“Cool bowl…”, did we just read your mind? If not, well now you’re thinking about it. 🙂 But seriously, we were incredibly happy to find a product like this. Recycled glass home accents are becoming relatively more popular in recent years, but we’ve never seen one with this kind of organic shape and design. This piece is also handmade in Spain. It doesn’t have an explicit eco-feel to it, but it’s worth supporting brands that are acting sustainably.

Wall Planter, Modern Recycled Metal Planter – Large Slice of Re-purposed Farm Sprinkler Pipe
By: Andrews Reclaimed

A Conscious Alternative

This planter is made from a large slice of a re-purposed farm sprinkler pipe. It has a modern, minimalist feel to it, and can be easily hung or screwed on/into the wall. It’s helpful to note that the bottom is capped with a permanently glued-in, fine-grained cedar wood. We recommend getting a succulent along with this planter to complete the look.

Handmade Bowl, Fair Trade & Crafted with Sustainably Harvested Fibers
By: NOVICA

A Conscious Alternative

This bowl is 100% plant-based, crafted with Pine needles, wood-rush and raffia. It’s also hand-woven by the women of Komon Utzil (a women-run design co-op in Guatemala). In our opinion, it makes for a great centerpiece, either on your kitchen table or living room coffee table. If your friend that you’re planning on getting a gift for likes supporting Fair Trade efforts, that’s a bonus.

Barnwood Picture Frame, 8x10 Rustic Reclaimed Wood Frame, with Leather-look Easelback & Glass
By: Homestead Series

A Conscious Alternative

Pictures frames are a classic gift. This one is made from 100% reclaimed barn wood, and is hand-crafted in the USA. If you choose to buy it, we recommend putting a photograph of you and the person you’re getting a gift for in the frame. It’ll add a nice, personal touch.

View Our Research Standards.

Each of our six badges has its own unique set of metrics. These are some of the qualities (i.e., metrics) we try to look into when assessing a product and brand with respect to each of our badges:

AGREEABLE CO FLAT ICONS 3__NEW

Socially Responsible (purple triangle):
+ Does the company abide by Fair Trade Practices, or is it Fair Trade Certified;
+ Is there a commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR);
+ Is the company philanthropic – does it donate goods or services to environmental or humanitarian efforts;
+ Does the brand promote corporate transparency;
+ Are there any community engagement initiatives set in place;
+ Does the company communicate healthy and equitable working conditions along the supply chain;
+ Does the brand abide by fair and honorable employment values;
+ Is there a disclosure of sourcing methods, and are such materials or ingredients sourced responsibly;
+ Does the brand have a cause-driven mission towards human & environmental health & well-being.
*We do not conduct in-person audits. Oftentimes we will consult the language and standards set by third-party certifications and seals such as Fair Trade Certified, B Corp Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified, Green America Certified, etc. We will, however, do independent research with respect to certain badges and utilize peer-reviewed articles. Also, please note that according to the Journal of Economics and the EPA, “social responsibility” does include practices and commitments that support environmental health and well-being; thus, the qualities of this badge may overlap with our other badges.

Eco-Conscious (red triangle):
+ Does the company practice sustainable modes of production;
+ Is the product composed of materials and/or ingredients that are biodegradable;
+ Are the materials and/or ingredients compostable;
+ Does the company have carbon reduction or mitigation strategies set in place;
+ Do the involved materials and/or ingredients have a relatively low environmentally impact;
+ Does the company utilize reduce or reuse principles in their facilities;
+ Does the company use renewable or efficient energy technologies in the production of their good(s);
+ Are there practices in place that work to maintain ecosystem biodiversity;
+ Is environmental stewardship a part of their business model.
*We aim to be transparent and objective when it comes to labeling a product as “Eco-Conscious”, and reject “greenwashing”. According to marketing and advertising standards set by The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Green Guides, it is most accurate to communicate not that a product is necessarily “good” for the environment, but that it is a “better environmental alternative”. This is the message we aim to communicate in labeling a product as “Eco-Conscious”.

Quality Materials/Ingredients (M/I) (green triangle):
+ Does the product contain organic or certified organic m/i;
+ Is there a significant degree of m/i ‘naturalness’;
+ Is the product non-GMO or Verified Non-GMO;
+ Are the m/i biodegradable;
+ Are the m/i compostable;
+ Do the m/i raise little to no concern in terms of m/i toxicity;
+ Is the product treated with harsh chemicals;
+ Is there a healthy ratio of synthetic or artificial m/i to natural m/i;
*For select “Pantry” products, we may look into health and nutritional value.
*For select products, we may consult reviews to assess m/i effectiveness.
*Generally, these are the ingredients that we try to steer clear of: Acesulfame-K (acesulfame potassium), Acetylated ester of mono- and diglycerides, Ammonium chloride, Antibiotics, Artificial colors (Synthetic and FD&C Certified), Artificial flavors, Aspartame, Astaxanthin, Azodicarbonamide, Bentonite, Benzoates, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), Bisulfites, Bromated flour, Brominated vegetable oil (BVO), Calcium bromate, Calcium disodium, EDTA, Calcium peroxide, Calcium propionate, Calcium stearoyl-2-lactylate, Calcium sorbate, Caprocaprylobehenin Carmine, DATEM (diacetyl tartaric and fatty acid esters of mono and diglycerides), Diglycerides (acceptable in supplements), Dimethylpolysiloxane, Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DSS), Disodium calcium EDTA, Disodium dihydrogen, Disodium guanylate (GMP), Disodium succinate, Dimethylamylamine (DMAA)… Read more at Free From 101.
